Allow Extra Time Around Your Overland Track

The Overland Track is a remote wilderness journey.

Your actual finishing time can change because of:

  • Weather

  • Snow

  • Heavy rain

  • Track conditions

  • Injury

  • Fatigue

  • Side trips

  • Walking pace

  • Ferry arrangements

For this reason, don't schedule an important flight, restaurant reservation or accommodation check-in immediately after your expected arrival.

Allow a buffer whenever possible.

If you have a flight to catch, contact us before booking so we can help you select the most appropriate transport option.

Why Book Your Return Transport Early?

The Overland Track is one of Tasmania's most popular multi-day hikes.

Once popular walking dates become available, transport demand can increase quickly.

We recommend booking your:

  1. Overland Track departure

  2. Launceston to Cradle Mountain transport

  3. Return Lake St Clair transport

  4. Ferry

  5. Accommodation

  6. Hiking gear

as early as possible.

Parks & Wildlife Service specifically advises walkers to plan their transport to and from the Overland Track, and notes that transport is not included in the Overland Track booking fee.

What Weather Should You Expect?

Don't assume that walking the Overland Track during summer means warm weather.

The Overland Track crosses exposed alpine country and severe cold, rain and strong winds can occur at any time of year, including summer.

You should be prepared for:

  • Rain

  • Snow

  • Strong winds

  • Cold nights

  • Low cloud

  • Mud

  • Warm sunshine

  • Rapid weather changes

Good waterproof clothing and appropriate shelter are essential.

Why Carry a PLB?

The Overland Track is remote and there is no reliable mobile phone reception throughout the route.

A Personal Locator Beacon (PLB) provides an important emergency option if you experience a genuine life-threatening emergency and cannot obtain assistance by normal communication methods.

Parks & Wildlife Service notes that many walkers appreciate the security provided by carrying a PLB.

We strongly recommend that every group considers carrying a PLB.
